Pet Ownership

Indirect evidence suggests that pet ownership may affect stress through its association with reduced stress-related disease mortality or total mortality (Friedmann 2019; Friedmann and Thomas 1995; Friedmann et al. 1980, 2011). However, limited attention has been paid to direct effects on stress. Some epidemiological studies describe differences in stress indicators between pet owners and those who do not own pets, with inconsistent results including lower (Anderson et al. 1992) and higher (Parslow and Jorm 2003) physiological stress indicators. A few studies of companion animals in a home setting suggested that the animal’s presence reduced stress indicators, such as with the introduction of dogs into homes with autistic children (Viau et al. 2010). Of course, people choose their pets based on their attitudes, making it difficult to separate contributions of pet ownership and pet attitudes to any stress moderation experienced by pet owners (Serpell 1981).
